Louisville, Ky (WKYT) - The Kentucky State Fair says its taking steps to protect against swine flu, at this year's event. The fair, in conjunction with the Kentucky Department of Agriculture, has established procedures for swine entering the Kentucky State Fair’s Swine Pavilion.

The Fair says veterinarians will visually inspect all swine upon arrival. Animals with suspect signs, such as coughing, sneezing, and/or labored breathing, will be held and evaluated. If an animal is found with clinical signs consistent with respiratory infection, it will be
refused entry.

Veterinarians also plan to assess the Swine Pavilion daily. A news release from the fair says any animal exhibiting symptoms will be isolated, tested and the results forwarded to the State Animal
Health Official.

Harold Workman, President & CEO of the Kentucky State Fair Board said, “We are certainly prepared for the slightest sign of any outbreak, and of course, the public will be notified immediately should anything occur.” Workman also noted that hand washing stations are plentiful at the Kentucky State Fair and encouraged fair-goers to wash their hands upon entering and exiting livestock areas.

The Kentucky State Fair is August 16 – 26 at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville.
