MCCREARY COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT/WYMT) - The state is shutting down a troubled jail in southern Kentucky. On Friday, jail officials are moving all inmates out of the McCreary County jail.

The judge-executive says the state is closing the jail due to the building being in disrepair and various other problems. The McCreary County jail is more than 40 years old has had a host of problems in recent months, including six escapes in a six month time span.

County officials say the problems are basically tied to financial difficulties. Inmates are being moved to Laurel and Whitley counties.

The jailer says he would like to see a new jail built, but the judge-executive says state officials have tome him the county may not have the inmate count to warrant a brand new facility.
