CLARK COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - A Winchester elementary school was on lockdown for half an hour this morning, after school officials say an unknown man tried to check a child out of school.

The principal told WKYT's Brittany Pelletz that the man had claimed the child's mother was outside waiting in a car, but when someone went outside to check, there was no car. The man did not have ID and was not on the list of people authorized to take the child from school.

The man left the school, and officials called the police. The classrooms were locked down to protect the students, whose lessons continued. The police are still searching for the man to question him, but the lockdown has been lifted.

There are still some restrictions on the students; they will not be allowed to go outside for recess.
