Teammates visit Dunbar baseball player in Florida hospital

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - According to those around him, a Dunbar baseball player is starting to show small signs of improvement.

18-year-old Travis Gaines from Dunbar High School was airlifted to Sacred Heart in Pensacola after emergency crews say he misjudged the depth of water while diving. Gaines is in Florida with the baseball team for the Florida Beach Bash Tournament.

One player's mother who is in Florida with the team right now tells WKYT teammates visit Gaines's hospital room twice a day. They are focused on supporting him as much as they can. The team plays again Thursday at 3 p.m. The mother says the team will plan some sort of event for their home game Tuesday. They want to help Gaines and his family with the tremendous hospital bills they're now facing.

An account has been established for donations for the family at Fifth Third Bank. Donations should be made payable to the following, “For The Benefit of Travis Gaines.”
