WASHINGTON COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - The Washington County Sheriff's department says a 16-year-old has died after they say he accidentally shot himself on Saturday.
The Sheriff's office says that Austin McBride suffered a gunshot wound to his abdomen around 7am Saturday morning. He was flown to Kosairs Children's Hospital where he was pronounced dead later that afternoon by the Jefferson County coroner.
Deputies say McBride's stepfather Mark Riley told them that McBride was getting ready to leave for a shooting competition. His mother, Amy Riley stated that she heard him screaming when she got out of the shower and found him lying on the ground next to their SUV. She states that McBride was familiar with gun safety.
Deputies say it appears that Austin may have been cleaning the weapon, a .22 caliber handgun, when it went off.
