LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) -

"She expressed to me today that she just really wants to go home and I don't blame her," says Eldridge Shanks, Dominique Dawson's father.

Dominique Dawson, 14 is still recovering at UK hospital after being hit by a Uhaul on Richmond Road last Tuesday. Police believe a drunk driver was behind the wheel.

"Last week I was kind of like a wreck because you know, something that tragic to happen. If it had been a little up on her body, it would be probably be more of a damaging blow. It could have been fatal," adds Shanks.

Dominique survived but Shanks, father tells WKYT that both of her legs were broken. She needed immediate surgery and now has two metal rods in her legs.

Dominique's father says she'll be headed to Cardinal Hill for rehabilitation Wednesday. Shanks was initially concerned about Dominique's mounting medical bills.

"A Uhaul representative had called her and ask the hospital to transfer all of the medical bills to them to the insurance. So we shouldn't have a problem with the medical bills now. It shouldn't be a concern, which God blessed us. It's a good thing," says Shanks.

Family of Dominique hope that she will get to go home within the next 5 to 10 days.

"My school, where I go to school at, they are building a wheelchair accessible ramp for her at the house so she can come outside when she wants," Shanks says.

As for the man police say did this to Dominique, 34-year-old Stewart Smith has bonded out of jail. He will answer to his many charges at the end of the month.

"Focus on recovery and waiting on the legal thing to play out. That's what it came down to now. Really thankful for all of the support that everybody has showed her," says Shanks.

Police say that they found an open bottle of vodka and prescription pills inside the Uhaul. They also say that Smith took off after hitting Dawson. According to police, witness descriptions lead them to find Smith and his passenger, Alison Green on I-75 20 minutes after the accident.
