LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Four crime bulletins in just three weeks. Now, UK students remain on alert after a series of crimes around campus.

WKYT has been tracking these robberies and assaults all month. In each case, the victim was alone at night. Students who don't want to walk alone around campus do have an option to help protect them.

Many students spooked by the recent robberies and assaults on UK's campus are now utilizing a campus program called SAFECATS.

"It's kinda a community service sort of thing, but at the same time it's just for everyone's safety. It just seems like a good idea to offer something else rather than having to walk home alone," said Brittney De Jaco, a SAFECATS volunteer.

De Jaco says each time you hear about an assault on campus, the phones at SAFECATS start ringing. She and fellow Air Force ROTC students spend Sunday through Thursday nights coordinating rides and walks for students who want a companion going to and from buildings at night.

"We've definitely been very busy. A lot of students utilize our service on campus. I think people just feel a lot more comfortable having an escort at night," Andrew Basanta, a SAFECATS volunteer, said.

It's a service, meant to keep students safe.

"A lot of people are just worried a little bit about walking on campus at night with some of the recent crimes, this is just a free escort service we have provided to students at UK," explained Basanta.
