Members of the UK hockey team are mourning the loss of a teammate. 22-year-old Taylor Vit died Monday from injuries he received after crashing his SUV into a LexTran bus Sunday afternoon.
As hockey teammates replaced their Facebook photos with Taylor Vit's jersey number in memory of their fallen friend, they weren't alone in their grief. On the ice, Vit was a crowd favorite. From his pro shop overlooking the rink, Chris Martin often watched Vit practice and compete, and he remembers the last time he sharpened skates for the promising young athlete. "Sitting on that couch right there, just sitting waiting on his skates," Vit said, "He was really quiet. He was a quiet guy, and he was kind of a gentle type of a person."
Fans describe Vit as an inspiration to younger players. "Even with the parents here. A lot of these parents, their kids are playing high school and stuff, and they knew him," Martin said, "He was all out. He pushed himself, and to be an alternate captain, that's a big set of shoes to fill, and even to be a captain it is, and those guys, they elected him to do that for a reason."
Sunday Vit crashed his SUV into the back of a LexTran bus that was stopped on Newtown Pike. Several passengers were taken to nearby hospitals for what police describe as minor injuries, but Vit was not so lucky. "Everybody here is going to miss him, even down to the parents and the guys at the concession stand will miss him," Martin said, "It's just going to take some time."
The team's general manager tells 27 Newsfirst in addition to being the leading scorer this season, Vit was a friend to everyone. The team was scheduled to play in a tournament this coming weekend. Now without their most valuable player, teammates have decided to play as a tribute to him.
