LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - An unnamed Louisville sports figure played "Secret Santa" by paying off $13,000 in layaway merchandise for 169 families in Kentucky.
The Courier-Journal reports that the donor had to be sneaked into the back of a Wal-Mart in southwestern Jefferson County on Dec. 18 for a meeting with managers.
Store officials looked at layaways with children's toys and drew up a customer list, then spent 10 hours the next day calling people to inform them their layaways were settled.
Summer Anthony, an assistant manager at the Wal-Mart, says the first shoppers to pick up their layaway were an elderly couple. Anthony says the woman began crying and soon the employee helping her started crying.
Sworn to secrecy, Anthony would only say the donor is a sports figure linked to Louisville.
