RICHMOND, Ky. (WKYT) - Wednesday marked a somber anniversary for the families of a central Kentucky couple.

Wednesday marked the one year anniversary of the day the remains of Sonsaray Warford and Charles Walker were found in Madison County.

They disappeared two years before that; police say they were murdered.

The hillside where the couple was found symbolized significant loss for their families just one year ago.

“It’s a hard time we have been through and we have a long way to go but through our families and friends we can do this,” said Gregory Todd, Warford's father.

But on Wednesday, there was hope on that very same hillside as family and friends joined together to pray, sing and remember.

“You can’t help but to hold tears away. You have tears of sadness because of the loss but then you have tears of joy because of the closure we have,” said Brenda Douglas, Warford's aunt.

It took police years to find the couples’ bodies and family members say after waiting that long, it's a relief to have a physical reminder of the young couple.

Sonsaray's father drives down the road his daughter's memorial is on nearly every day because he says it helps give him strength as well as closure.

“I come through here more than people know. I come here and I say prayers and if I go down the road I usually turn around I say prayers when I come back. I say I’m going to be here with you until it’s over. I have to,” Todd says.

During Wednesday’s painful anniversary ceremony, the families found strength and solace by leaning on one another.

The memorial gave them the opportunity to focus less on the untimely deaths of Charles and Sonsaray and focus more on the legacies they left behind.

A Madison County Grand Jury indicted Daniel Keene and Matthew Denholm on murder charges in this case.

The jury also indicted Lebruce Ellington on complicity charges.

Investigators say Ellington provided the murder weapon used to kill Warford and Walker.
