FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - The annual Governor's Awards for Outstanding Volunteer Service have been presented to 17 groups and individuals in a ceremony at the Governor's Mansion.

Two Lifetime Achievement Awards were presented Monday, one to Jeanette Elder of Pikeville and the second to George B. Merrifield Jr. of Louisville.

First lady Jane Beshear and Health and Family Services Deputy Secretary Eric Friedlander made the presentations.

The governor's office launched the volunteer awards program in 1975. The Kentucky Commission on Community Volunteerism and Service has administered the program since 1995.

Independent judges chose recipients in 13 categories. Two additional awards were presented for participation during the last October's food drive.

A special First Lady's Award was added for the second year for providing extra help for youth at risk of dropping out of school.
