WKYT Investigates: New tools to stop food stamp fraud

New information following our food stamp fraud investigation. We uncovered millions of taxpayer dollars going to the wrong people.
When we started digging, we discovered the state hands out more than four million dollars in money that shouldn't have been given out.
These days food stamps are on an EBT Card or Electronic Benefit Card. Those cards are sometimes bought and traded illegally. We've aired several arrests involving the cards just in the past year.
Sometimes, people that are using the EBT Cards illegally will claim their card was stolen in order to get a new card.
So, just this week, the state has a new tool that will better track how many times a person on food stamps asks for a replacement card.
A director with the Cabinet for Health and Family Services says they know everyone who loses a card may not be involved in fraudulent activities, however, this will help monitor how many times a person asks for a replacement.
He says if more than four cards are issued to the same person, the cabinet will send them a letter. The letter will say they are aware of the number of cards the person has requested and give the card user reminders about how best to use the card.
This is all an effort by the cabinet to be more pro-active in catching possible fraud cases in Kentucky.
