LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT/WYMT) - Stick figure family decals are a popular way for people to display their family on vehicles. However, police warn too much information about your family can be a bad idea. "We have to be careful about what type of information we're putting out there," said Sherelle Roberts with the Lexington Police Department.
Roberts said the decals intentions aren't meant to promote paranoia on the part of those who choose to display them, yet awareness that the more information you put out there, the more opportunities for a possible predator. "When people are looking to target a crime, they look for those specific indicators that make them think this is someone I can target."
"I think you do have to be careful and not put their full name on anything visible to the public," said Carrie Oser while visiting Jacobson Park with her twin boys. Oser doesn't have car decals, but on occasion she has put her children in clothing or had items made with their names printed on them.
Police say full names on young people's clothing or backpacks can also be dangerous and they advise against it. Police said it follows the same theory as the the stick families, that the more information about your child you publicize to strangers, the more you open possible dangerous opportunities.
