LONDON, Ky. (WKYT) - It is a pretty simple question for the 11 women and 3 men on the jury….Did Lisa Gilliam shoot and kill her husband..or did the London lawyer kill himself?
Prosecutors say that Larry Gilliam was having a lot of personal and professional troubles on January 7th, 2011. He was filing bankruptcy…and had hired an attorney for a divorce with Lisa Gilliam..all the while still dealing with child support…and other issues from a previous divorce. Prosecutors maintain that the murder weapon was found in Lisa Gilliam’s desk.
“This defendant shot Larry Gilliam…..there-by causing his death,” Commonwealth’s Attorney Jackie Steele told jurors during his opening statement Monday.
Yet Lisa Gilliam’s attorneys say that Mr. Gilliam shot and killed himself. Some of their evidence was a picture they showed jurors of money and other items, with post-it notes on each stack of money, detailing who was to receive those funds. And they say that Lisa Gilliam was in another part of the law office when the shot was fired. They stated that the suicide was a culmination of numerous financial and other issues.
“You will hear that he had to make a $2,300 alimony payment by the end of the day. He had to make an additional $1,000 in alimony by the end of the day,” said Robert Norfleet, Gilliam’s attorney.
Lisa Gilliam’s frantic 911 phone call was submitted into evidence. The Corbin News Journal obtained a copy of the call..where Gilliam is heard screaming that her husband was shot.
Caller: “He’s shot his-self in the chest!!!
Dispatcher: “He started what?”
Caller: “ He has shot himself in the chest and he’s dying!” Gilliam is heard screaming in the call.
That 911 call is expected to be a key piece of evidence for the defense when their cases starts later this week. The trial is expected to end late Wednesday or early Thursday.
