Candidates for governor make final push for votes

Campaign 2011 has entered the home stretch.

At 6 a.m. tomorrow, the first polls will open across the Bluegrass.

Many statewide offices will be on the ballot, including governor.

Incumbent Democrat Steve Beshear faces Republican David Williams and independent Gatewood Galbraith.

On Monday, the last full day of campaigning, David Williams gathered his entire ticket to fly across the state. When he met with reporters in Lexington, he had friendly words for the media.

"Now I'm going to do something unusual today," Williams said. I'm going to promote everyone in the state to read the Courier-Journal because less than 24 hours before the polls open, the Beshear administration has finally come clean. They've been misrepresenting the financial situation in the state of Kentucky."

The article reported a bleak fiscal outlook over the next two years, but at an event in Somerset, Governor Steve Beshear remained optimistic about Tuesday.

"We're going to be politicking around the state. We're going to end up in Louisville tonight at a big rally, the whole ticket, the whole team will be there for the final rally before we head into election day, Beshear said.

Despite trailing significantly in public polls, Galbraith seemed relaxed, insisting election math could still work to his advantage.

"You know, we can win this with 350,000 votes. I thought it was going to take 450,000, but we can win it with 350,000," Galbraith said. "We believe we can get that many people who are ready for a change to go to the polls tomorrow."

With low voter turnout expected, none of the candidates appeared to be taking anything for granted.
