Two representatives of the Kentucky House announced Monday they have pre-filed a bill that would create a tax-free shopping weekend, geared toward school related items.

Republican Rep. Julie Raque Adams, of Louisville, and Republican Rep. Donna Mayfield, of Winchester, say they are co-sponsoring the bill, which will be considered during the upcoming 2012 legislative session.

In a news release, Adams and Mayfield said their bill could create a sales-tax free shopping weekend in Kentucky, before the start of school in August for elementary, secondary, and post secondary students.

According to the bill, items that would not be taxed during that weekend would include clothing up to $100, school supplies (including those needed for art class, calculators, glue, and related items), computers up to $1,000, and computer supplies (including printers) up to $500.

If passed, Adams and Mayfield say the bill would go into effect in time for the start of school in August 2012.
