FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Kentucky Secretary of State Elaine Walker has completed radiation treatment for breast cancer and says she is cancer-free as she is about to begin her new post in the Department of Parks.
Walker was diagnosed in October after a routine mammogram. Her office says she underwent surgery, followed by twice-daily radiation treatments for five consecutive days.
Walker said in a statement that early detection and getting a second opinion were key in deciding her treatment and encouraged others to learn about their options.
The 60-year-old former Bowling Green mayor who was appointed secretary of state this year lost her bid for a full term in the May primary election. Gov. Steve Beshear appointed her to be parks commissioner this month, and she begins Jan. 2.
