FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - U.S. Sen. Jim Bunning reported raising a meager $27,357 in his latest campaign finance report, sparkingDoll questions about whether he actually intends to seek re-election next year.

The report, filed with the Federal Election Commission in Washington and covering a three-month period ending Dec. 31, showed Bunning had $150,000 on hand, far short of the $10 million the baseball Hall of Famer said he would need to win his race.

"That's not a lot of money," said Stephen Voss, a political science professor at the University of Kentucky. "When politicians do not attract a lot of money, it means people don't think they have a good chance of winning ... it really raises the question of whether he is trying to put together a campaign war chest."

The finance report, filed Wednesday and released publicly on Friday, shows Bunning has raised $524,000 since his re-election in 2004 and that he has spent more than $470,000 in preparation for next year's race.

Bunning spokesman Mike Reynard declined to comment on the finance report, saying the senator will discuss it in a conference call with reporters on Tuesday morning.

GOP stalwart Larry Forgy, a Kentucky attorney and two-time gubernatorial candidate, said people may be sounding alarms too soon, considering the general election is 21 months away.
