Highway Commissioner Seeks To Prevent Hearing

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - State Highway Commissioner Marc Williams is trying to stop the Executive Branch Ethics Commission from conducting a hearing September 24th. The hearing is on allegations that he violated the state's ethics code by improperly funneling business to an engineering firm. A hearing on Williams' request for a temporary injunction to stop the ethics case is scheduled for this afternoon.

Ethics Commission General Counsel John Steffen says he will oppose Williams' request. In a lawsuit filed Tuesday against the ethics commission, Williams said a hearing this month could hurt him in a criminal investigation being conducted by Attorney General Greg Stumbo's office.

He said he would have to choose between invoking his Fifth Amendment privilege against self-incrimination or testify and run the risk of aiding the criminal investigation.
