Andy Barr announced Thursday he will ask for a recanvass of the votes cast in a very tight Sixth District Congressional race.
The Republican says he has sent a letter to the Kentucky Secretary of State's office, making his request.
Results showed incumbent Democrat Ben Chandler won the race by 600 votes. Chandler declared victory in the race Tuesday night.
In a statement Thursday, Barr said, "The people of central Kentucky, including members of the military who have cast absentee ballots, deserve proper assurance that every legal vote has been counted."
In a recanvass, county clerks recheck the voting machines and absentee ballots to ensure they were reported correctly.
The state says the cost is very minimal, and is covered by individual counties.
The secretary of state's office says the recanvass will take place next Friday.
