House still working on redistricting proposal

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - House lawmakers are still working on the always politically divisive issue of legislative redistricting.

State Rep. Brent Yonts, chairman of the House State Government Committee, said Thursday a redistricting bill is nearly complete and will be unveiled soon. He had included the issue as an agenda item Thursday before pulling it.

Lawmakers will need to rush to get the matter resolved. Only about nine working days remain in the current legislative session.

Redistricting is supposed to occur every 10 years to account for population changes found by the U.S. Census Bureau.

Legislation that passed last year was struck down by the state Supreme Court. Justices found the new districts weren't balanced by population and didn't comply with the "one person, one vote" mandate in federal and state law.
