LEXINGTON, Ky (WKYT) Dave Bunnell, the driving force behind making golf accessible to kids in Kentucky passed away this morning after a battle with cancer. He was 65 years old.
Bunnell founded the Larry Gilbert First Tee of Lexington, which provides great competition for the top young players in the state, as well as an opportunity for players of all levels to improve their golf game.
He was instrumental in bringing the PGA Senior Tour to Lexington. As a result Kearney Hill Golf Links in north Fayette County was built.
Bunnell served as board member on the Kentucky Golf Association for 20 years becoming president of both the KGA and KGA-PGA Inc. He received the KGA’s J.W. Janes Award and the KPGA’s Presidents Award and was inducted into the Kentucky Golf Hall of Fame.
Bunnell taught and coached at Tates Creek H.S. for 28 years. Later he became Athletics Director at Lexington Catholic High School and also served as Urban County Councilman for the 8th District from 1982 to 1993.
Visitation will be 4-8 pm Fri. at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, Harrodsburg Rd. Funeral services will be 9:30 am Sat. at Pax Christi Catholic Church, 4001 Victoria Way, Lexington, KY 40515, with burial following at Calvary Cemetery.
