Kentucky lawmakers open 2014 legislative session

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Kentucky lawmakers have begun a legislative session to be dominated by work on a new state budget.

The House and Senate convened at midday Tuesday, starting a session that will stretch into mid-April.

Highlighting the opening day of the 60-working-day session will be Gov. Steve Beshear's annual State of the Commonwealth speech Tuesday night.

Education funding looms as a key issue in the budget debate. Education leaders are urging lawmakers to restore recessionary school funding cuts.

Efforts to legalize casinos and revamp the state's tax code will headline a host of other issues sure to surface during the legislative session.
