MOREHEAD, Ky. (AP) - The president of Morehead State University says a smaller than expected tuition increase ceiling from the state will put pressure on the school's budget.

University president Wayne Andrews told The Independent that layoffs are not in the picture, but some plans will have to be scaled back at the school.

The Council on Postsecondary Education last week approved a 3 percent ceiling for tuition increases for the upcoming academic year. The increases apply to in-state undergraduates at all state public universities and the Kentucky Community and Technical College System.

The cap represents the smallest average increase in 15 years.

Andrews says adjustments to salary schedules, facility and equipment replacement and departmental budget requests all face possible reductions.
