PADUCAH, Ky. (AP) - Officials from western Kentucky are "cautiously encouraged" about the proper cleanup and reindustrialization of the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant site after spending a day meeting with federal officials in Washington, D.C.
Paducah Economic Development official Charlie Martin says workers from the U.S. Department of Energy listened to what a delegation from Paducah and McCracken County had to say about the site's future. Martin told The Paducah Sun the meeting left him feeling that new ideas for the site could come forward.
The United States Enrichment Corporation, which leases the plant from the DOE, announced on May 24 it would be ceasing operations within the coming year and laying off most of the plant's roughly 1,100 workers.
