Ky. Republicans look to gain House numbers

Updated: Tue 7:15 AM, Nov 06, 2012

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Republicans on the outside of wielding influence in the Kentucky House hope to win newfound clout as voters go to the polls Tuesday.

Democrats, meanwhile, are vying to add to their Senate numbers as voters decide whether to keep a Kentucky General Assembly divided along partisan lines. Democrats are in charge in the House, while Republicans are in control of the Senate.

There are 47 contested House races and 10 Senate races across the state on Tuesday.

In one high-profile race, former U.S. Rep. Carroll Hubbard, a Democrat, is running for a state Senate seat in far western Kentucky. He is running against Trigg County Judge-Executive Stan Humphries.

Republican legislative candidates are hoping to capitalize on the top-of-the-ballot race. Republican Mitt Romney is expected to carry Kentucky in the presidential race.
