Beshear releases bridge bill for special session

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Gov. Steve Beshear has released his plan aimed at eventually building new bridges between Kentucky and Indiana.

Beshear released his legislative proposal late Thursday, days before the General Assembly convenes a special session. Lawmakers are due back Monday to deal with this and other matters including Kentucky's $1 billion budget shortfall.

Kentucky lawmakers for years have struggled with how to finance and build new bridges between the two states. A plan stalled in the legislature earlier this year.

Among other things, Beshear's plan would create a new state authority to oversee financing and construction of transportation projects between Kentucky and Indiana. Beshear's plan authorizes the authority to impose tolls as one way of helping to pay for new bridges.
