Nearly one hundred animals were rescued from unlivable conditions Wednesday in Nelson County.

Police and Animal Control officers raided the home of Rosella Miller. Once inside they found, more than 70 dogs, dozens of cats, rabbits and a bird. They also found unclean conditions. Everything from the floors, wall, and even stairwells were covered with feces and thousands of maggots. "I know it looks bad", said homeowner Rosella Miller, but she says the animals were taken care of.

That's not what authorities say. Almost all of the animals had to be euthanized because they were so sick with diseases like mange."That's cruelty...to kill them just because they mange. Only five or six of them had it, and they were almost well", claimed Miller weeping. She also claims she's not responsible for the condition of the house. She says her neighbors set her up, made her house filthy, and then tipped off the authorities.

Police didn't buy it, she and the other person living in the Nelson County home are being charged with animal cruelty.

I say congrats to the neighbor for turning her in. Way too many animals are being abused and people just turn their heads. I do think it would have been better to treat the mange and try to place the animals up for adoption though.

I have read all the comments thus far. I agree that both parties in the home should be evaluated. Then, take it from there. I knew of a lady like this in the early eighties. She had a small path through the house and flower pots with dirt dumped in the sink and cat pee reaked. I've seen this befoe.

HAVE ANIMALS OF MY OWN AND THEY ARE WELL TAKEN CARE OF. BUT THEY LIVE WHERE ANIMALS ARE SUSPOSE TO LIVE AND IN LIVE WHERE I AM SUSPOSE TO LIVE. I HATE ABUSE OF ANY KIND.

Putting these animals down because of mange, something that is easily treated, is the real crime here. And where is it written in the law books that it is a crime to be dirty. Half the human population would be in jail if that was the case. I've seen some pretty disgusting homes where NO animals lived. An lastly, animals can't help themselves, they can't make choices. They are at the mercy of humans. That is why I look out for animals and help them. People can help themselves if they so choose.

I always see your comments on Animal abuse, you are always concerned that people do not care about people, well when I read a story about child abuse I never see a comment from you. It seems you only want to cry because people actually care about animals. it always seems you have one and take better care of it, you think you are a hero, to bad no one else thinks so. get a life and get involved in something that you are concerned about.

This is exactly why we need spay and neuter laws & more strict animal rights laws in Kentucky! People continuously lots of animals in their home for whatever reason and just get a slap on the wrist. The pain and suffering needs to stop! I am glad that her neighbors turned her in, more people need to speak up when they see animal cruelty occuring. We all need to make a concious effort as Kentuckians to seek a postive change in our animal rights legislation.

I, too, believe that she has a mental disorder. It is just a shame that it took her neighbor this long before it was actually reported.

I agree with Allen--there are mental health issues here that need to be dealt with, rather than immediately jumping to file criminal charges. Mental and physical health issues are behind a great many "crimes"--but jailing such people or even simply fining them, without treating the underlying cause, isn't going to accomplish much. These animals are removed, but doesn't the human being deserve a better life also?

Posted by: Allen Location: KY on Apr 24, 2008 at 08:00 AM
Sounds to me like the lady has mental problems and should be evaluated by medical authorities before charges are filed. For her to say neighbors made the mess and set her up...well, you get the picture.

working evenings and nights as a part time EMT ive seen both animal an person abuse you ever saw a child beaten severely because its hungry an was crying no food mom an dad needed dope an alcohol more guess the crying hurt their ears or the woman beat senseless because she paid the bills an bought food the husband needed the dope an alcohol more amazing the family PET IS WELL FED our elderly suffer the same by their kids an grandkids no one cares kids being molested by real animals people go to jail a few hours make bail an doing the same thing to someone dies no one care not important is it unborn child aborted no one cares an thats murder is there any 1 person out there that sees things the way i do i agree animal abuse is a problem Ive said that a lot of times but some on here just read the parts they want to DONT YOU an you all are fighting a good cause hope you win but these things are happening to innocent people 100s times a day no one cares well 2 does me an GOD sleep well

Her neighbor set her up? How in the world can this woman say that? I have three dogs and have to clean up after them each day (vacuuming the hair up, letting them outside). There was no reason for her to have 70 animals in her home. And then to not clean up when they made a mess... This is a classic case of animal abuse and she should be held responsible. Because of her, almost all of those innocent little animals lost their lives. Some people shouldn't be allowed to have pets.
