NEW ORLEANS (AP) - It was supposed to be the final fix for the blown-out oil well in the Gulf of Mexico -- a fix known as a "bottom kill." But now, it might not be necessary.
Officials could know this morning whether the well has been sealed for good by the mud and cement that were pumped in from above.
If it's decided the well is indeed sealed, then there will be no need to complete the relief well to plug the well from below.
An early afternoon news conference is set announce the findings.
