Investigation blames safety failings for deadly mine explosion

BECKLEY, W.Va. (AP) - Massey Energy Co. is disputing an
independent investigation that blames the company's safety failings
for the West Virginia coal mine explosion that killed 29 men last
year.
General counsel Shane Harvey says Massey disagrees with the
conclusion of the 113-page report released Thursday.
Massey still blames an uncontrollable inundation of methane gas
for the April 5, 2010, explosion at the Upper Big Branch mine.
Harvey says Massey's experts are confident of their conclusions
and believe coal dust didn't play a significant role in the
explosion.
The report dismisses that argument, instead saying
Virginia-based Massey could have prevented the disaster by
following basic safety procedures.
