33 Militants Killed in Clashes in Afghanistan

KABUL (AP) - The U.S. military says Afghan and international
forces have killed 33 militants in two days of fighting in
Afghanistan.
In a statement, the military says Afghan army and U.S.-coalition
troops killed 30 in a firefight in southern Afghanistan on
Thursday. It says troops were patrolling in a militant-heavy area
of Helmand province when they started receiving gunfire and
returned fire. One Afghan soldier was injured during the operation.
On Friday, Afghan and coalition forces killed three militants in
an eastern province. The fighting broke out during a raid targeting
a bomb-making cell. One militant was captured in the incident.
The fighting follows the death Thursday of an Australian service
member in southern Afghanistan. The bomb disposal expert died while
trying to defuse a makeshift device.
