Suicide Bomb Kills 48 at Pakistan Mosque

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) - A government official says a suicide
attack on a mosque in northwestern Pakistan has killed at least 48
Tariq Hayat, the top administrator in the Khyber region, says
rescuers have pulled 48 bodies from the rubble after the attack
near the town of Jamrud.
Hayat says the death toll is likely to rise. The mosque was
packed for Friday prayers.
The attack was the bloodiest in Pakistan this year.
A government official accused Islamist militants of carrying out
the bombing in revenge for a recent offensive. That operation was
aimed in part at protecting the major supply route for NATO and
U.S. troops in Afghanistan that passes in front of the mosque.
