Pakistan Kills 20 Militants; Peace Pact In Doubt

ISLAMABAD (AP) - Taliban militants say their peace deal with the
Pakistani government is "worthless."
The comments came after authorities yesterday sent troops backed
by artillery and helicopter gunships to attack Taliban militants in
Lower Dir, part of the region covered by the pact.
The Pakistani army says paramilitary troops have killed a total
of 46 suspected militants since the operation began. The army says
20 suspected militants have been killed today.
Some terrified residents have fled the area clutching no more
than their children and a few belongings. At least one soldier was
killed yesterday.
A spokesman for the Taliban in their Swat Valley stronghold has
denounced the operation as a violation of the pact and says their
fighters are on alert and waiting to see if a hard-line cleric who
mediated the deal pronounces it dead.
