Pope calls for Palestinian state alongside Israel

JERUSALEM (AP) - The pope is in Jerusalem, where he's calling
for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
The pontiff landed in Israel on the second leg of a weeklong
pilgrimage to the Holy Land. He's urging Israelis and Palestinians
to "explore every possible avenue" to resolve their differences.
The pope also pledged to "honor the memory" of the 6 million
Jewish victims of the Holocaust, speaking at the airport after he
landed.
Benedict has had to tread carefully on his Middle East visit
after coming under sharp criticism from both Muslims and Jews for
past statements.
