Pakistani army backs up citizens fighting Taliban

ISLAMABAD (AP) - A police official says the Pakistani army has
sent helicopter gunships to help citizens battling the Taliban in a
northwestern region.
Tribesmen took up arms against insurgents in Upper Dir over the
weekend after a deadly suicide bombing at a mosque.
Police official Atlas Khan confirmed Tuesday that helicopter
gunships struck two villages where the militants have strongholds
late Monday and Tuesday morning.
He says the aircraft are monitoring to see if any militants try
to escape the villages.
Military spokesmen could not immediately be reached for comment.
