GOP envisions August Senate vote on Sotomayor

WASHINGTON (AP) - Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee are clearing the way for a vote to confirm Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor. The panel's senior Republican, Sen. Jeff Sessions, says a vote should happen before Congress' August break. That places Sotomayor firmly in line to become the high court's first Hispanic justice.

Sessions spoke as Sotomayor neared the end of three grueling days in the committee's witness chair, time during which she largely sidestepped questions on controversial matters such as abortion and gun control.
