SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - There's still no official word on the status of three Americans believed held by Iran after apparently crossing into the country from Iraq.
But Iranian media reports say the three have been arrested for illegal entry and an investigation is under way. The group was believed to have been hiking along the border between Iraqi and Iranian Kurdish regions last week.
Iran state television says the situation is being used as a propaganda tool against the Islamic republic.
Meanwhile, diplomats have been trying to learn more details about the case from Iran's foreign minister.
Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is also appealing to Iran for information about the group, which includes freelance journalist Shane Bauer. He had planned to cover the elections in northern Iraq's self-ruled Kurdish region.
