16 sailors freed by Somali pirates

ROME (AP) - Italian authorities say 16 sailors, including 10 Italians, have been freed by Somali pirates who abandoned a hijacked vessel under apparent pressure.

The pirates had seized the men and their tug four months ago and had been shadowed by an Italian warship.

Foreign Minister Franco Frattini tells SkyTg24 television news that Italian and Somali authorities had been working together gathering intelligence and applying diplomacy.

He says the Somali government and local authorities "made the pirates understand that the only solution was the liberation of the hostages."
