WASHINGTON (AP) - White House press secretary Robert Gibbs says President Barack Obama will announce his new Afghanistan strategy "within days."
The president met for two hours Monday with top advisers for the last major discussion before the announcement.
Gibbs says Obama "has the information he wants and needs" to make a decision on whether to commit tens of thousands of new U.S. forces.
Gibbs told reporters Monday that it's "not just how we get people there, but what's the strategy for getting them out."
Military officials and others expect Obama to settle on a middle-ground option involving up to 35,000 U.S. forces.
The White House is bracing for a tough sell to the public, to foreign allies and to lawmakers who would approve the spending. The announcement could come after Congress returns from its Thanksgiving break next week.
