Russia and US to resume arms control talks

MOSCOW (AP) - Russia's foreign minister says Moscow will restart talks with Washington on a new arms control treaty this month.

Sergei Lavrov said Tuesday in televised remarks that the negotiations will resume "somewhere in the second half of January."

The new treaty would replace the 1991 Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty that expired on Dec. 5.

The two countries had hoped to reach a deal before the end of the year, but problems persist.

In late December, Moscow said it wanted Washington to share detailed data about the sea- and land-based systems the U.S. plans.

The systems would replace the plans to place interceptor missiles in Poland and a radar in the Czech republic.

Russia treated the plans as a threat, and President Barack Obama scrapped them last year.
