WASHINGTON (AP) - Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton says the U.S. will do all it can to help Haiti surmount a "cycle of hope and despair."
Interviewed on ABC's "Good Morning America," Clinton says it's too early to make a firm estimate of the number of deaths in the wake of the devastating earthquake. She says officials know some 3 million people, including 45,000 Americans, are affected and that "tens of thousands" are feared dead.
She notes that Haiti was still recovering from the tragic storms of last year when the 7.0 magnitude quake struck Tuesday. Clinton says one challenge is "get people back into some semblance of normalcy." She calls the Haitians "resilient people," and says no one is giving up on them.
