WASHINGTON (AP) - The number-two Democrat in the Senate believes Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke will win another term.
Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois concedes that many Democrats are apprehensive. But after meeting with Bernanke on Capitol Hill yesterday, Durbin says that, when the economic chips were down, Bernanke's actions prevented financial collapse.
Durbin says Bernanke should win a second term with help from Republican senators.
Bernanke needs 60 votes to overcome a procedural hold on his confirmation placed by Vermont independent Sen. Bernie Sanders.
But Durbin says even senators who might oppose Bernanke have said they would not try to block his confirmation from reaching the Senate floor.
Bernanke's current term ends Sunday.
