BAGHDAD (AP) - The U.S. military and Iraqi officials say a joint raid on suspected weapons smugglers in a village near the Iranian border has left at least five people dead.
The U.S. military said suspected militants were killed Friday after the villagers opened fire on Iraqi and American forces. Initial military reports put the number of dead at five.
But Maysan provincial council lawmaker Maytham Lafta said those killed were "all innocent people."
He says at least 10 people were killed, including two women. Lafta says another five were wounded.
The discrepancy in the number of dead could not be immediately reconciled.
The police official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the incident publicly.
