Democrats seek to extend jobless benefits by month

WASHINGTON (AP) - Ohio Republican George Voinovich is a major player in a key Senate procedural vote Wednesday on another unemployment extension.

He says he'll side with the Democrats to keep the debate moving ahead, even though he personally dislikes the idea of adding the cost to the nation's debt. Democrats say they need more time to iron out a separate extension that would last through the end of the year.

A top Senate Democrat proposed Tuesday to give unemployed people jobless benefits through Memorial Day instead of just another three weeks.

Montana's Max Baucus proposed the additional time as the Senate debated legislation to revive a federal unemployment insurance program for the long-term unemployed.

Extending unemployment benefits for the long-term jobless has prompted a battle between Republicans opposed to more debt Democrats wanting to use borrowed funds.
