Fighting rages, Taliban leader may have been killed

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - Afghan forces are battling militants in a remote region near the Pakistan border again today. It's the sixth day of fighting.

Hundreds of militants have been trying to seize control of a district of Nuristan province since Sunday.

Villagers who took part in the fighting say they killed a Pakistani Taliban leader, but Afghan officials say they have not been able to confirm the report.

As the combat in eastern Afghanistan rages on, NATO reports a service member was killed in the south and a U.S. spokesman says the service member was American.

It was the 1,000 U.S. military death in the 9-year-old Afghan war according to an Associated Press count.
