American on mission to kill bin Laden arrested

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) - Pakistani police say they've detained a California man who claims to have been on a solo mission to kill Osama bin Laden.

One officer says he and his colleagues laughed when they picked up Gary Faulkner in a northern region close to the Afghan border. But he says they got more suspicious when they found he was armed with a pistol, a 40-inch sword and night-vision gear.

Police say the man intended to cross into Afghanistan.

Faulkner was questioned today by intelligence officials in Peshawar, the main northwestern city.

Faulkner told police he'd been to the area before.

Police say Faulkner was also carrying a book containing Christian verses and teachings. He told police, "God is with me, and I am confident I will be successful in killing him."
