DRAPER, Utah (AP) - Utah has carried out an execution by firing squad for the first time in 14 years.
Ronnie Lee Gardner was put to death for fatally shooting two men in the 1980s, the second during a failed escape attempt at a Salt Lake City courthouse. Gardner chose his manner of execution, but then worked furiously with his lawyers to prevent it.
A team of five police marksmen carried out the sentence shortly after midnight.
Gardner, who had a white target pinned to his chest and was strapped to a chair, was pronounced dead at 12:20 a.m.
