LOS ANGELES (AP/CBS) - Actress Angelina Jolie says she underwent a double mastectomy earlier this year after learning she carries a gene that gives her an 87 percent chance of getting breast cancer.
Jolie writes in today's New York Times op-ed that between February and April she underwent surgical procedures to remove both breasts.
"The decision to have a mastectomy was not easy. But is one I am very happy that I made," Jolie wrote in the article.
Jolie says she thought of her mother dying of breast cancer at age 56.
Jolie says she didn't want her six children to lose their mother to cancer. She began three months of secret procedures in February, finishing about two weeks ago.
During that time, Jolie made a humanitarian visit to the Republic of Congo and attended the Women in the World Summit in New York, and the G-8 Summit in London.
