Attacker in bomb-packed ambulance kills 7 in Iraq

BAGHDAD (AP) - Iraqi officials say at least seven people were killed when a suicide attacker crashed an explosives-packed ambulance through the front gate of an Iraqi guard force headquarters today.

The attack in the city of Baqouba targeted the Facilities Protective Services compound. It houses the local headquarters and some training grounds for the Iraqi security force, which protects government buildings.

An Iraqi police spokesman says the ambulance exploded when guards opened fire to try to stop it, and a nearby building crumbled to the ground. At least 74 people were wounded. A provincial spokeswoman says children from a nearby kindergarten were among those hurt.

About an hour after the attack, another suicide bomber detonated an explosive-packed belt among a group of Shiite pilgrims walking to holy sites. the spokeswoman says at least one person was killed and 15 injured.
