Drag racers caught on runway, have to pay cleanup

HARLAN, Ky. (AP) - Officials in Harlan say they won't charge three men caught drag racing at the city's airport.

According to WYMT-TV in Hazard, the men will, instead, have to pay an $8,000-$10,000 cleanup fee after oil spilled from one of their cars.

David McGill of the Harlan County Emergency Management Agency said a hazardous materials team was called in late Friday to scrub the landing strip so pilots wouldn't encounter slippery spots.

McGill said cleaning the runway at Tucker Guthrie Memorial Airport required scrubbing up all of the material used to soak up the oil, so it wouldn't get sucked into airplane engines.
